A Shadow of the Past
One of the most significant chapters in Bethulie’s history is its role as the site of the third-largest concentration camp established by the British during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
The camp, created in April 1901, quickly gained a reputation as the “archetypal ‘bad’ camp” due to its exceptionally high mortality rate. Conditions were desperate, plagued by inadequate supplies and devastating epidemics. This immense human tragedy existed alongside a paradoxical development: the British administration’s efforts to improve conditions resulted in lasting infrastructural improvements for the town, including a modern water supply system. This juxtaposition presents a complex and moving narrative about resilience and the unforeseen consequences of conflict. The Concentration Camp Memorial Site now stands as a solemn tribute to the thousands who perished.
